How to setup MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)

Issue: While trying to log into your email or Microsoft software, you are prompted to validate your identity.

 

Requirements 

  • You must be logged out of your email and office products.
    • Note: If Microsoft does not automatically log you out, you can go to portal.office.com and manually log out.  
  • Microsoft password 
  • Your phone 

 

Steps: 

  1. The following screen will display once Microsoft logs out. Select Next  

 

 

 

  1. Enter your Microsoft password and select Sign in (Some users might not have to complete this step) 

  1. Click Download now which will direct you to the Microsoft website  

 

 

  1. On the Microsoft website, scroll down to “Get the app on your phone”. Scan the QR code with your Android or iOS device.  

  • Note: If you do not have a QR code scanner on your phone, you can manually download the Microsoft Authenticator app from your phone’s app store and skip to step 6 

 

 

 

  1. Click on link that pops up when scanning the QR code 

 

 

 

  1. Download the app on your phone and then select Open 

 

  1. Once the Authenticator app is open, select Accept (it won’t let you continue if you choose Decline

 

 

 

  1. Choose Scan a QR code and then click Ok when asked to access the camera. The camera view will pop up. You will come back to this on step 11. For now, go back to browser. 

 

 

 

  1. On browser, select Next 

 

 

 

  1. Select Next again 

 

  1. Use the Authenticator app to scan the QR code. Choose Allow when prompted to receive notifications (you must click Allow). After QR code is scanned, go back to browser and choose Next 

 

 

  1. Microsoft will send a notification to your phone asking, “Approve sign-in?”, select Approve 

 

 

  1. You have the option of using Face ID (this is personal preference) 

 

 

  1. Browser will display that the set up was successful!
